What is Swanson Lecithin?
Lecithins are funny things – they’re absolutely everywhere. Our body mostly synthesises them from food such as egg yolks, soybeans, wheat germ, fish, yeast and peanuts and we need them to keep our cholesterol levels down. What they are exactly tends to change depending on the context but in this instance they are a mixture of phospholipids and oil.
Phospholipids are a fat soluble component of the cell membrane of just about every plant and animal. They prevent the cells from hardening whilst facilitating the passage of nutrients between cells. Put another way, without them your intercellular network would be restricted massively stifled, incapacitating you from passing around the vitamins your body needs.
If that weren’t enough then you should also know that Lecithins are a main component of bile and help the body to break down fat. Without them we not only open ourselves to the risk of minor ailments such as gallstones but also allow fat deposits to grow inside us, raising our LDL cholesterol levels.
Because the main source of Lecithins is currently soybeans there has been substantial clamour surrounding the genetic modification of those beans and the knock on effect on supplements like Swanson Lecithin. Fortunately this is a 100% GMO free product which allows you the peace of mind you need to keep using this potent nutrient without having to worry about genetic tampering.
What is Swanson Lecithin used for?
Since 2007, when the GMO Compass (“a consumer website collecting objective, science-based information on the use of genetic engineering in the agri-food industry.”) determined that many Soy Lecithins were using genetically modified soy, there has been concern in the community for the potential and unknown effects this could have on our health as consumers.
After all, these are products whose DNA has been fundamentally changed to resist the effects of herbicides and insects. A study published in The Journal of Applied Toxicology revealed that when mice were fed GM soybeans they develope inhibited pancreatic function. Effects which were reversed once their diet was changed back.
Swanson Lecithin allows you to enjoy these benefits without having to worry about the potential and unknown pitfalls of GM Soy.
