What is Activated Charcoal?
Activated charcoal is derived from charcoal, a fine black power which is commonly sourced from wood, bamboo, coconut shells, peat and other natural materials by heating them in a controlled environment. Activated Charcoal is purposely formed for medical use by heating charcoal in a presence of gas. In doing so the charcoal then develops lots of pores which can trap, attach and absorb to a variety of chemicals and gases.
In health because activated charcoal is not absorbed by the body, but in fact absorbs unwanted gases or toxins in the digestive tract, it then supports the body by removing substances out through faeces. In fact in the early 19th Century charcoal biscuits were used by people to relieve flatulence and stomach discomforts, but today charcoal is available in perhaps more tolerated form of capsules and a tasteless power which can be mixed with water.
What is Activated Charcoal used for?
Activated Charcoal is commonly used in two ways in health:
- Relieving trapped wind: Activated charcoal binds itself to gases in the digestive tract to help dispel them and their accompanying odour.
- Treating poisoning: In its useful activity as an absorber; sometimes under medical guidance activated charcoal is used to remove poisons from the body when this has been ingested orally. Although this is not effective on all poisons.
Reducing bouts of flatulence yourself may also be effective by making small changes in your diet, such as drinking less carbonated drinks, chewing your food thoroughly and slowly and avoiding or reducing the amount you eat of stimulating foods such as eggs, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts. However it is always useful to have a natural alternative method close by. Swanson brings you activated charcoal in a convenient and easy to consume form of a capsule to delivering is gas fighting power direct to the digestive tract.
