What are Swanson Ultra Tocotrienols?
With so many different vitamin families, it can be hard to keep tabs on which one does what, and more importantly, which nutrients from those families you need and which you can do without.
Fortunately for all of us, Swanson have managed to distil the vitamin E family down into just the bare elements needed to keep our hearts healthy and active. Fundamentally, the vitamin E family is made up of four Tocotrienols and four Tocopherols. Common knowledge holds that D alpha Tocopherol is the most well known of the group but does that necessarily make it the best, and what really is the difference between them all?
Put simply, it comes down to heads and tails. If you think of each of the eight sub nutrients of the E-complex as having both a head and a tail and each of those heads either being a Tocopherol or a Tocotrienol, four of each, then you’re beginning to get the picture.
For each of those tails there are alpha-, beta-, gamma- and delta-. The tails of the Tocotrienols are essentially longer than the Tocopherols and are saturated, which as confusing as it may sound, is actually really good news.
It is that unique structure that allows the Tocotrienols to do things that the Tocopherols cannot.
- Tocotrienols have easier access to our cells
- They have better antioxidant function within those cells
- They are able to move around in and between our cells
- Better cholesterol regulation
Ultimately, they are the better functioning version of the two types, which is why Swanson Ultra Tocotrienols is standardised to be 99% Tocopherol free, to guarantee you better complete heart protection.
What are Swanson Ultra Tocotrienols used for?
So, if they’re both part of Vitamin E complex, surely they’re both good? So why can’t we just have both of them and be done with it? Unfortunately research has shown that Tocopherols actually have a detrimental effect on Tocotrienols ability to lower our cholesterol.
The research concluded that any more than 15% Tocopherols and any less than 60% gamma and delta Tocotrienols would inhibit the antioxidant activity of Vitamin E complex and render it pointless. Fortunately for us, Swanson Ultra Tocotrienols contains no less than 85% gamma and delta Tocotrienols and is 99% Tocopherol free.
By harvesting the only known natural source of Tocotrienols, the Annatto plant from Brazil, they have revolutionised the way we supplement our vitamin E intake and created a hugely effective dietary supplement for boosting our cardiovascular health.
